The Appleby Centre is Cleaswell Hill School’s satellite provision, designed to support students, typically from Year 9 onwards, who are following a qualification-based pathway and are preparing for their next stage in education, employment or training. The Centre plays a key role in our wider curriculum offer, providing a purposeful and carefully structured transition between the main school site and adulthood.

Origins of The Appleby Centre

The Appleby Centre was established in response to an identified need for a bridging provision to more effectively support senior students who are on the pathway typically leading to further education, employment or training. It was recognised that a distinct environment, separate from the main school site and its younger pupils, would provide these learners with the opportunity to develop greater independence, maturity and accountability in a setting more closely aligned with community expectations. 

In addition, the creation of a site with its own grounds enables the delivery of enhanced vocational opportunities, particularly in key vocational areas such as horticulture, catering and outdoor learning. Crucially, the Centre also offers a space that can replicate, as far as possible, aspects of a mainstream secondary experience, helping to bridge the gap between school and the wider world while maintaining the support and structure our students require. The Centre is named in honour of a much-loved and valued member of staff whose legacy continues to inspire the ethos and work of the provision.

Purpose and Context

At Cleaswell Hill School, we recognise that students require different environments and approaches to thrive. The Appleby Centre has been established to meet the needs of learners who benefit from a more independent, mature setting and who do not require a highly therapeutic curriculum. 

Whilst therapeutic provision remains a strength of the main school site, the Appleby Centre continues to incorporate therapeutic strategies within its provision. Delivery is supported by a Therapy Assistant who works closely with the school’s Occupational Therapist and Speech and Language Therapist; however, this level of therapeutic input is more targeted and less intensive than that offered at the main site, reflecting the differing needs of students and their increasing independence as they prepare for adulthood.

The Centre reflects our commitment to a flexible, pathway-led approach, ensuring that provision is matched closely to individual need, while maintaining high expectations and ambition for all learners.

Curriculum Offer and Qualifications

Students at The Appleby Centre access a broad and balanced curriculum with a strong focus on accredited outcomes. All students study core subjects, including English, Maths and Science, alongside a range of qualifications at GCSE, Level 1 and Entry Level. This ensures that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills required for progression into further education, training or employment.

In addition to core learning, students engage in vocational options that are responsive to their interests and aligned with local opportunities. Current vocational pathways include catering, horticulture, performing arts, STEM and Duke of Edinburgh. This offer reflects our commitment to providing meaningful, relevant learning experiences that prepare students for real-world contexts and future pathways.

Preparation for Adulthood

Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) is at the heart of The Appleby Centre provision. Learning is underpinned by the four key PfA outcomes: independent living, health, employment and community inclusion, ensuring that students develop the skills and confidence required for life beyond school.

Students have regular opportunities to apply their learning in practical and community-based contexts, promoting independence, resilience and self-advocacy. The Centre’s environment supports students in developing the maturity and responsibility expected in post-16 and post-18 settings, helping them to navigate change and prepare for adult life.

Work Related Learning and Employability

All students at The Appleby Centre access personalised work related learning experiences, reflecting the school’s inclusive and graduated approach. Opportunities are tailored to individual needs and aspirations, and may include in-school enterprise, supported placements and external experiences.

This ensures that students develop key employability skills such as communication, teamwork, responsibility and an understanding of workplace expectations. These experiences become increasingly embedded and progressive, supporting students to make informed decisions about their future pathways. 

A Stepping Stone to Adulthood

The Appleby Centre serves as a vital stepping stone between the main school site and post-16 destinations. Many students who attend the Centre aspire to progress into further education, and the provision is designed to support this transition effectively.

Students learn to manage increased independence, adapt to new routines and thrive in a more adult-focused environment. This gradual transition supports confidence and readiness, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the expectations of college, training or employment.
