Prevent is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist or extremist causes. The Prevent strategy covers all types of terrorism and extremism, including political and religious extremism. School staff are trained to identify and respond where they have concerns relating to a child expressing or showing interest in extremist and terrorist ideology.

To help pupils, parents, carers and visitors understand safeguarding language, we provide the following glossary.

A

Abuse
A form of maltreatment of a child. Abuse may be physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect. Children can be abused by adults or by other children. [gov.uk]

Acceptable Use Agreement (AUA)
An agreement that sets out expectations for safe and responsible use of technology, devices and the internet.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Potentially traumatic experiences in childhood that can affect a child's health, wellbeing and development.

C

Child-on-Child Abuse
When children cause harm to other children. This can include bullying, physical abuse, sexual harassment, harmful sexual behaviour, online abuse and emotional abuse. [gov.uk]

Child Protection
The processes and actions taken to protect specific children who are suffering, or are at risk of suffering, significant harm. [gov.uk]

Contextual Safeguarding
An approach that recognises risks to children outside the family home, including online, in the community, at school or within peer groups.

County Lines
A form of criminal exploitation where children are used by criminal networks to transport drugs or money.

D

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
The senior member of staff responsible for leading safeguarding and child protection across the school. [gov.uk]

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL)
A trained member of staff who supports the DSL and fulfils safeguarding responsibilities when required. [gov.uk]

Domestic Abuse
Controlling, coercive, threatening, violent or abusive behaviour between people who are personally connected.

E

Early Help
Support provided as soon as concerns emerge to prevent problems from escalating and to improve outcomes for children and families.

Emotional Abuse
Persistent emotional maltreatment that affects a child's emotional development and wellbeing.

F

Filtering and Monitoring
Systems used by schools to help identify and reduce online risks by restricting access to inappropriate content and monitoring safeguarding concerns. [gov.uk]

G

Governing Body / Safeguarding Governor
The governing body oversees safeguarding arrangements. The safeguarding governor provides challenge and support to ensure safeguarding remains effective.

H

Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB)
Developmentally inappropriate sexual behaviour displayed by children that may be harmful to themselves or others.

Health and Wellbeing Check-In
A structured opportunity for pupils to share how they are feeling and to identify any worries, concerns or support needs.

I

Intimate Care
Support required by some pupils with personal care needs, delivered respectfully and safely in accordance with school policies.

 
M

Mental Health
A person's emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Safeguarding includes promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Mobile Phone Policy
A school policy outlining safe and appropriate use of mobile devices by staff, pupils and visitors.

N

Neglect
The persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in serious impairment to health or development. [gov.uk]

Online Safety
Teaching and supporting children to use the internet, technology and digital communication safely and responsibly. [gov.uk], [gov.uk]

P

Peer-on-Peer Abuse
Another term often used for child-on-child abuse. [gov.uk]

Prevent Duty
A legal duty requiring schools to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and extremism.

Pupil Voice
The views, opinions and experiences of pupils that help shape decision-making and school improvement.

R

Report a Concern
The process of sharing worries about a child's safety or wellbeing with a DSL or another appropriate professional.

RHSE (Relationships, Health and Sex Education)
The curriculum that teaches pupils about relationships, health, wellbeing, safety, personal boundaries and respect. [gov.uk], [gov.uk]

Risk Assessment
A process used to identify potential hazards and put measures in place to reduce risk.

S

Safeguarding
The actions taken to protect children from harm, prevent impairment of health and development, and ensure children grow up in safe and effective care. [gov.uk]

Safe Touch
Teaching children about appropriate and inappropriate touch, body autonomy and how to seek help if they feel uncomfortable.

Sexual Harassment
Unwanted conduct of a sexual nature that violates a child's dignity or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment. [gov.uk]

Social Care
Local authority services that work to support, protect and improve outcomes for children and families.

T

Trauma-Informed Practice
An approach that recognises the impact of trauma on behaviour, learning and relationships and responds with understanding and support.

W

Wellbeing
The state of being healthy, safe, comfortable and happy, including emotional, physical, mental and social health.

Whistleblowing
The process by which staff can report concerns about unsafe practice, behaviour or safeguarding failures.

Y

Young Carer
A child under 18 who helps to care for a family member who has a disability, illness, mental health condition or substance misuse issue.
